  1. Welcome to The Bill Drawer!
  2.  
  3. This program is designed to help you pay your bills in a timely
  4. manner.  Unlike "checkbook" programs, which assume you know what
  5. you want to pay, "The Bill Drawer" helps you organize your bills
  6. by their due date, then gives you powerful features to review,
  7. select and write checks for only the bills you desire.
  8.  
  9. In addition, there are many features to help you anaylze both
  10. your unpaid bills and expenditures, like:
  11.  
  12.    * Recurring Bills
  13.    * Cash Requirements Reporting
  14.    * Expense Catagories
  15.    * Company Statistics
  16.    * Check Register and Supporting Detail
  17.    * Account Reconciliation
  18.    * History Reporting
  19.  
  20. Basically, to use this program you follow this cycle:
  21.  
  22.    1. Enter your bills as they are received.
  23.    2. On a periodic basis review your cash requirements and bills
  24.       that are due.
  25.    3. Select the bills you wish to pay by total amount, due date,
  26.       company, or expense catagory.
  27.    4. Print the checks.
  28.    5. Review and monitor your cumulative expedentures.
  29.    6. Reconcile your bank accounts.
  30.    7. Produce the desired reports.
  31.  
  32. Program Requirements:
  33.    The Bill Drawer is a Microsoft Windows program, and as such
  34.    requires Windows Version 3.0 or higher.  In addition, MS-DOS
  35.    Version 3.3 or higher is also required.
  36.  
  37.    This version of The Bill Drawer is written in Microsoft Visual
  38.    Basic, and because of this, you may find performance, especially
  39.    initial program loading, slightly sluggish in comparison to
  40.    commercial Windows programs.  If this is your case, try using
  41.    Windows Standard Mode instead of Enhanced Mode.  You will find
  42.    that most Windows programs execute much faster in this mode.
  43.    The "About Program Manager" menu option, under the "Program
  44.    Manager Help" menu indicates which Windows mode you are currently
  45.    using.  To force Windows into Standard Mode, use "WIN /S" to load
  46.    Windows.  Note that if you run a lot of DOS programs under Windows,
  47.    you may want to revert to Enhanced Mode to run DOS programs.

  49. Visual Basic Runtime:
  50.    The Microsoft Visual Basic runtime, a file named VBRUN100.DLL, 
  51.    is required to run both the Bill Drawer installation program 
  52.    and the main program.  This file may or may not be included in 
  53.    this distribution package depending on where you received it from.
  54.  
  55.    If the file was not included in this package, and you do not 
  56.    already have it, you can download it from CompuServe (GO MSBASIC)
  57.    or a local bulletin board.  Look for a BBS that contains a Windows
  58.    file section.  This file is freely distributed by Microsoft.

  60.    After you download the file, copy it to your main Windows directory
  61.    (usually \WINDOWS) before executing The Bill Drawer installation 
  62.    program.
  63.  
  64.    If the VBRUN100.DLL file is included with this distibution package,
  65.    no special considerations are required, as the installation program 
  66.    will copy it for you.   
  67.  
  68. Registration:
  69.    Per the license agreement, you may use this program for 30 days
  70.    to evaluate it's suitability to your needs.  At the end of this
  71.    period you must either register it or delete it from all computer
  72.    systems where it was installed.  The registration fee is a very
  73.    reasonable $15 (US) payable to:

  78.    Please use the "REGISTER.TXT" form when registering, you can print
  79.    it with Windows Notepad (under the Accessories group).

  81.    Registration includes a printed manual, current version of the
  82.    program, and notification of new program versions.  We have many
  83.    exciting plans for future versions of this program, but they will
  84.    not happen without enough people telling us they like the program
  85.    by registering it.

  87. Installation:
  88.    The Bill Drawer comes with an automated install program, which
  89.    will install the programs, files, and help files required to
  90.    execute the program under Microsoft Windows to your hard disk.
  91.  
  92.    To execute this install program, following the following steps:
  93.  
  94.    1. Make sure you have at least 1 megabyte of freespace on your hard
  95.       drive.
  96.  
  97.    2. Load Windows and make sure that all extraneous applications
  98.       are closed.
  99.  
  100.    3. Select the "Run" menu option under "Program Manager File"
  101.       menu.
  102.  
  103.    4. Run the install program, by entering a command line of
  104.       "A:INSTALL.EXE" or whatever path will point to the install
  105.       program.
  106.  
  107.    5. Complete the desired install options and select "OK".
  108.  
  109. Installation Options:
  110.    The following installation options are supported:
  111.  
  112.    View README File - Check this option box to view this file,
  113.       before continuing with the rest of the installation.
  114.  
  115.    View License Information - Check this option box to view the
  116.      terms upon which this program can be used.  You must review
  117.      and agree to these terms before installing the program.
  118.  
  119.    Install Programs - Check this option to copy the program and
  120.       help files to your hard disk.
  121.  
  122.    Install Demo Files - Check this option to copy the demonstration
  123.       files to your hard disk.  This option is highly recommended.
  124.  
  125.       Once you have reviewed the demonstration files and want to
  126.       start fresh with your own data, delete all ".IX" and ".DAT"
  127.       files per the packing list below.  All files, except the
  128.       "FRM0100.DAT" file must be deleted.  The program will then
  129.       create new, empty files for you the next time it is run.
  130.  
  131.    Build Program Group - Check this option to build a Windows
  132.       program group for this program.  This option supports the
  133.       Windows Program Manager only, if you are using another
  134.       Windows shell, like the Norton Desktop, do not use this
  135.       option.
  136.  
  137.    From Directory Name - Enter the drive and path where the
  138.       installation files can be found.  The format entered must
  139.       be "drive:\path" or an error message will be displayed.
  140.  
  141.    To Directory Name - Enter the hard drive and path where you
  142.       want the program installed.  The format entered must be
  143.       "drive:\path" or an error message will be displayed.
  144.  
  145. Manual Installation Process:
  146.    Should the automated install program fail for any reason, you
  147.    can try manually installing the program using the following
  148.    steps:
  149.  
  150.    1. Create a directory on you hard disk for The Bill Drawer.
  151.       For example, "CD C:\MELSOFT\BILLS".
  152.  
  153.    2. Copy all the distribution files to this directory.  No files
  154.       or programs need to reside in the Windows directory.  For
  155.       example, "COPY A:\*.* C:\MELSOFT\BILLS".
  156.  
  157.    3. Create a new program group and program item, using the
  158.       Windows Program Manager File Menu (New option).  The program
  159.       item should reference the correct path and "MAP0112.EXE".
  160.       For example, a command line of "C:\MELSOFT\BILLS\MAP0112.EXE"
  161.       would be entered for the new program item.
  162.  
  163.    4. Use the Windows Notepad to review LICENSE.TXT.  This is the
  164.       Program License Agreement whose conditions you must agree to.
  165.  
  166.    5. Double click on your new program item.
  167.  
  168. New Features:
  169.    Version 1.12 of this program has the following new features:
  170.  
  171.    * A clear history file capability was added.  You can now clear
  172.      history (paid items, checks, deposits, etc.) from the file
  173.      by bank and date paid.  This will speed processing in the
  174.      "Check Register" window (see MAPMENU.HLP).
  175.  
  176.    * A second instance of the program, i.e. running the program 
  177.      twice, will now be detected and disallowed.  This protects 
  178.      the files from multi-user damage.    
  179.  
  180.    Version 1.11 of this program has the following new features:
  181.  
  182.    * A "void check" capability was added.  You can now enter checks
  183.      that you manually voided (see MAP18.HLP).
  184.  
  185.    * Correction capabilities were added to the "Check Register".
  186.      You can now correct any check, cash payment, withdrawl or
  187.      deposit that was entered incorrectly (see MAP13.HLP).
  188.  
  189.    * Void entry capability.  You can now void any check, cash payment,
  190.      withdrawl, or deposit on the "Check Register", and the program
  191.      will automatically reverse it (see MAP13.HLP).
  192.  
  193.    * Clearing checks now has better feedback.  A confirmation window
  194.      containing the check number and amount is now displayed.
  195.  
  196.    * The word "DOLLARS" can now be printed on the check, if it is not
  197.      included on the pre-printed form (see MAP9.HLP).
  198.  
  199. Major Fixes:
  200.    Version 1.12 corrects the following problems:
  201.  
  202.    * An "Overflow!" message occurred when entering a check or printing
  203.      checks and the last check number was over 32000.
  204.  
  205.    * History file backup failed if the old backup file could not
  206.      be found.
  207.      
  208.    * The "Enter a Check" window will now always update the last check 
  209.      number for the bank, even if it's not higher.
  210.  
  211.    * The "Change a Bill" catagory listbox was not sorted.
  212.  
  213.    Version 1.11 corrects the following problems:
  214.  
  215.    * The "Cancel" button is supported when adjusting the bank balance,
  216.      or adjusting company or catagory totals.
  217.  
  218.    * Double lines on the "Check Register" after canceling a check,
  219.      withdrawl, or deposit have now been eliminated.
  220.  
  221.    * Check amounts of less than 1 dollar (cents only) will now be
  222.      correctly printed on the check.
  223.  
  224.    * Catagory seek errors after deleting a catagory with outstanding
  225.      bills has been corrected, provided the bill is corrected first.
  226.  
  227.    No other significant problems were reported.  There were no changes
  228.    to any of the files, so they keep the "0100" designator.
  229.  
  230. Help Files:
  231.    All help files have an extension of .HLP and can be reviewed
  232.    and printed through NOTEPAD, in addition to the program itself.
